The author has used the Journal and Minute Books of The Royal Society, the correspondence of Sir Hans Sloane and other contemporary materials, published and unpublished. She concludes that the factors involved in Balle's decision included family connections, genuine interest in some of the subjects with which the Society was concerned and a belief in the need for the free exchange of ideas. They co-existed with Balle's wish to utilize membership of the Society to further his social and commercial ends and his use of scientific patronage for the enhancement of self-esteem and personal prestige. This information indicates that the transformation of the Ottoman Foreign trade at the turn of the eighteenth century was linked to the following economic trends of the second half of the eighteenth and the first half of the nineteenth centuries: the emergence of the European supremacy in naval transportation, a change in the terms of trade that was disadvantageous for the Ottomans, and a shift in the trade partners of the Ottoman Empire. /// Cette contribution exploite les données des registres de la douane ottomane du port de Smyrne, consignant les importations étrangères, conservés aux archives d'Istanbul. But such visions of a population in movement have remained for the most part enclosed within the frame of national boundaries. In recuperating the history of Arab France in the early nineteenth century, this article investigates a diverse population drawn chiefly from Egypt, Syria, and Palestine but united by a common Arabic language and culture. From the earliest arrivals in 1801, this population manifested an irrepressible urge to move between the centers of Marseille and Paris and circulated regularly across the Mediterranean basin. Initially highly diverse in religious, social, and regional background, they found common structures of community and identity not despite but within these practices of mobility, which were often subjects of conflict within the community. The article analyzes one such story, following the traces of a conflict between members of the \"Arab colony\" in Paris in 1811. On the basis of literary and governmental sources, including the little-known ironic philosophical dialogue Les Juifs (Livorno, 1786), and an analysis of Tuscan municipal reforms, it appears that Livorno offers an alternative model of integration to the better-known Prussian and French cases. The Tuscan government and intellectual elite did not consider the useful Livornese minority in need either \"to be improved\" or better \"integrated into society,\" and thus the Enlightenment critiques of Jewish society typical of French and Prussian reformers and the calls for Jewish self-improvement that characterized the Haskalah are not applicable to Livorno. However, the notion of utility that defined the Livornese community during the Old Regime was not a station on the road to emancipation. Jewish utility in Livorno did not bring about greater civil rights for individual Livornese Jews. Rather in both function and perception, it contributed to the arrested political integration of Livornese Jewry in the 1780s compared to events in all other Tuscan Jewish communities"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"174"},["name","Short Title"],["description"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29545"},["text","\"Two Jews walk into a Coffeehouse\""]]]],["element",{"elementId":"187"},["name","Attachment Title"],["description"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"29546"},["text","JSTOR Full Text PDF"]]]]]]]]]
