Questa letteratura si rifà di solito al post-strutturalismo di Michel Foucault e all'orientalismo di Edward Said, includendo in alcuni casi il decostruzionismo di Jacques Derrida. L'Europa stessa viene intesa come una costruzione culturale e non vi è nulla di naturale o di necessario nella rappresentazione che le diverse epoche si sono date dei continenti e della loro delimitazione. All'epoca di Élisée Reclus (1830-1905) quello di continente è un concetto che oscilla fra la definizione cinquecentesca di \"terre continue\" e quella più generica di \"parti del mondo\", seguita all'invenzione dell'Oceania, definizione inaugurata da Conrad Malte-Brun, autore della precedente Geografia Universale.
