Dans cette société d'Ancien Régime, le terme \"étrangers\" renvoie en effet à une réalité bien plus complexe : l'habitant d'un village voisin, parfois le membre d'une même famille, peut être désigné comme étranger, et la personne originaire d'ailleurs ne pas entrer dans cette catégorie. L'étranger est moins une figure sociale qu'une condition présente à l'horizon de tout habitant de la ville. Per la città di Ivrea, nel Piemonte Nord-occidentale, tutti costoro potevano essere registrati come cives (cittadini) o come forestieri, dei quali conosciamo l’origine esatta. Troviamo però anche un gran numero di habitatores o incolae, che risiedevano in Ivrea ma non godevano (o non godevano ancora) dei pieni diritti di cittadinanza. Sulla base di queste informazioni è possibile procedere a uno studio sistematico delle modalità d’integrazione socio-economica degli immigrati nella comunità ospite. Tramite l'impiego del database Eporedia, che comprende circa 36.000 registrazioni nominative per il periodo compreso tra la fine del XV e l’inizio del XVII secolo, questo articolo esplora le modalità secondo le quali i forestieri sceglievano se stabilire contatti sociali formali (di alleanza matrimoniale o parentela spirituale, o attraverso la selezione dei testimoni di nozze) con i cittadini o con altre componenti della comunità ospite.
