Depuis le dernier quart du xviie siècle, les hommes et les femmes capturés en mer et ceux arrivés sur le sol marocain suite à un naufrage sont propriété du sultan. Et, depuis Moulay Ismaël, ils sont quasiment tous regroupés à Meknès, où ils sont employés à la construction de la ville royale. Leur nombre, élevé, varie selon les époques et les conjonctures politiques et économiques. Pour les racheter, les Pères rédempteurs devaient se rendre à Meknès pour négocier leur libération. Non seulement l’action des religieux n’aboutit pas toujours, mais certains captifs n’ont aucun espoir de retrouver un jour la liberté.Les évasions sont donc un autre moyen d’échapper à sa condition d’esclave et de mettre fin aux humiliations et aux privations endurées dans la capitale royale, Meknès à l’époque. Au début du xviiie, après une rédemption plus ou moins réussie, le père Dominique Busnot nous fait connaître l’existence des « métadores », passeurs marocains qui pouvaient conduire certains captifs vers Mazagan ou vers l’un des présides de la côte méditerranéenne, c’est-à-dire vers l’une des « terres chrétiennes », selon la terminologie de l’époque. Il semble d’ailleurs que les Espagnols exploitaient cette dangereuse filière bien avant les Français. Both forms of human capital are habitually seen as strongly intertwined, yet our evidence shows that they were not always geared to one another. Literacy did not grow significantly in Antwerp during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, while it reached its high-water mark in other European towns. Faced by a severe economic crisis, the local government had to trim down free public education in Sunday schools, while private boarding schools (Duytsche scholen) saw their number of pupils fall abruptly as the recession impoverished a wide swath of society. Numeracy, however, followed a different course. Despite the economic crisis, people's age awareness took a huge leap forward in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries as basic arithmetic skills were bound to a more informal, everyday training.
