In the Histoire des deux Indes, this idea was dramatically discussed: Raynal wanted to defend it; Diderot dismantled this project showing that civilisation was but the mask of violent conquest. Nuovi studi hanno però dimostrato che le forme di anticipazione e di credito \"in natura\" sono invece state uno strumento di vitale importanza nelle comunità rurali e, più in generale, nei contesti in cui gli istituti di credito e la circolazione di moneta scarseggiavano. In quest'ambito la vicenda dei Monti frumentari appare esemplare: essi sono stati per secoli una presenza diffusa nelle comunità minori della penisola italiana e, come i più noti Monti di pietà, hanno abbinato l'erogazione di credito a una peculiare dimensione etica.
