Salvatore Lupo - storico tra i più acuti e autorevoli - ragiona di quegli avvenimenti, e del mito che già allora si costruì intorno ad essi, nonché della rielaborazione della memoria che ne seguì di lì a un ventennio. Per restituire appieno la dimensione dei conflitti, il libro fa ricorso al termine \"rivoluzione\" (parola nobile e impegnativa), e insieme al suo opposto, \"controrivoluzione\"; o all'altro termine più inquietante, per la nostra coscienza e a maggior ragione per quella del tempo, di \"guerra civile\". Si trattò infatti di uno scontro politico e sociale, ma non solo: si sovrapponevano e si contrapponevano diversi patriottismi, quello siciliano, napoletano, italiano. La vittoria dell'uno sull'altro e la sinergia tra l'uno e l'altro vanno ricondotte alla relazione tra un certo tipo di patria e un certo tipo di libertà. Queste complicazioni, in larga parte offuscate e rimosse nel lavorio di costruzione della nostra memoria, ci obbligano a ridefinire alcuni schemi interpretativi sul Risorgimento.
