While a student of law he became interested in themes such as civil liberty and political economy which he elaborated later in his historical writing. He was also inspired by philhellenism and after coming to fight for Greece in 1823-25, he returned in 1827 to live in the country for the rest of his life. Despite the variety of broader contexts in which Finlay can be fruitfully considered, relatively little has been written about him. This paper situates Finlay in the context of the history of ideas and aims at a better understanding of his major work, History of Greece 146-1864 AD (7 vols, 1877), by tracing the intellectual roots of his attitudes and the contemporary context as well as the development of Finlay's liberal philhellenism."]]]],["element",{"elementId":"174"},["name","Short Title"],["description"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"28868"},["text","'Two thousand years of suffering'"]]]],["element",{"elementId":"187"},["name","Attachment Title"],["description"],["elementTextContainer",["elementText",{"elementTextId":"28869"},["text","JSTOR Full Text PDF"]]]]]]]]
