The author, who draws largely from the papers in the Florentine State Archives, examines this process of «re-enfeoffment», found especially in the Sienese and Pisan Maremmas, well-wooded regions with considerable areas of publicly-owned property. Here the feudal lords are at the hub of monetary and legal administration of which they are also the controllers. This state of affairs lasted until the law of 1749, decreed by Francesco Stefano di Lorena, which curtailed the power of the feudal lord to a considerable extent and which was to increase State intervention in the judicature."]]]]]]]]
