S. Jevons puis de l'admiration de l'École Autrichienne d'Economie (dont Hayek et Rothbard notamment).L'Essai, dans son ensemble, peut être interprété comme étant l'une des premières tentatives de théorie générale de l'économie. Cantillon a soin de dégager ce qu'il convient d'appeler des « lois générales de l'économie », celles qui sont dans la nature des choses, et non dans les faits particuliers de tel ou tel pays.Dans cette recherche, il introduit également plusieurs concepts centraux pour la compréhension de l'économie, comme l'entrepreneur, acteur central d'une économie de marché, ou les « effets Cantillon », qui montrent pourquoi l'inflation provoque une redistribution injuste des richesses.
