Abstract Note

How is it possible to speak of an end to the wars of religion in nineteenth-century France? The hypothesis that religious violence disappeared is based, in part, on the peace brought by the Concordat of 1801. This system, created by Bonaparte after the Revolution, gave public authority control over the religious leadership in return for state recognition of both the Catholic majority and the Protestant and Jewish minorities. The religious peace was also based, in part, on the fact that the most violent and revolutionary antagonisms came to be fed by more than religion and that religious conflicts were profoundly politicized and gradually civilized. Thus the conflicts over control of the schools, while ever more prominent in public opinion, were nevertheless essential to the pacification of religious violence.
